Advanced Medical Assisting with Extended Externships


To provide our students with the practical, clinical and administrative knowledge and skills required to perform as competent and reliable Medical Assistants, or in related fields.  Advanced Medical Assisting with Extended Externships (AMA w EE) students may complete this program in 52 weeks, which includes 21 weeks of clinical externships.

The clinical objectives of AMA under supervision, are to:

  • Document medical histories
  • Educate patients
  • Assist with physical examinations
  • Collect and prepare specimens
  • Perform basic laboratory test
  • Administer medications
  • Medication calculations
  • Authorize prescription refills as directed by physician
  • Perform phlebotomy
  • Perform electrocardiograms
  • Remove sutures and perform dressing changes
  • Set up a sterile filed

The administrative objectives of AMA under supervision, are to:

  • Be able to use computer applications
  • Answer phones, greet patients and schedule appointments
  • Update and file patient medical records
  • Code and complete medical insurance forms
  • Describe the procedures used for hospital admissions
  • Handle correspondences

Method of Delivery

With the exception of AMA 190 L, all remaining 100 and 300 level courses are offered online.  Students are required to travel to ACA’s Separate Classroom located in Lakewood, CA for a 5 day pre-externship lab (AMA 190 L). All 200 level externships are offered at pre-determined clinical sites. Any travel, room and board expenses for attending ACA’s lab or externships are the responsibility of the student.
