Next week marks the 12th annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s Conference which will be held in Las Vegas. Each year exhibitors from around the world gather to show off the latest and greatest health care technology that will transform the future of healthcare as we know it!

A few of the technologies being introduced this year:

1) The ability to auto-populate electronic medical records of the correct patient as a doctor goes from room to room (as well as sync up with nearby printers and only give information in relation to the access that should be allowed for the individual in context) (www.aventurahq.com)

2)A electronic medical records (EMR) application for Android, iPhones, and iPads that is more secure and easier to use for physicians, as technology use has increased and is completely cloud compatible! Studies also have shown that usage of smart phones and tablets in medical settings has decreased medical errors.

3) A imaging database management system that is more secure and completely cloud based that reduces costs and improves care delivery.

4) A teleconferencing doctor site (www.teledoc.com) that plans to give access to physicians by phone or video conferencing 24/7 for less money than it would of cost to go to an emergency room or urgent care!

Smart phones are getting even smarter for health care too. Soon a smart phone could have attachments that will enable patrons to detect and map cataracts for eye care, check a pulse, or perform a mobile ECG, map your sleep patterns, and perform an ultrasound even!

With all this technology on the verge of coming out, what are your opinions on this? Will smart phones and technology improve the health of all or will those “in the know” be the only ones who can benefit? Will doctors in public hospitals be able to benefit from the influx of innovation, or will only privately funded institutions be capable of handling the switch to tech?
